Welcome — we're so glad you're here. If you're expecting a baby or have a newborn at home and would like an extra pair of gentle, capable hands, our placement scheme brings a newly accredited maternity nurse into your home to support you, free of charge for daytime placements.

Who your maternity nurse will be

Our maternity nurses have recently completed our OCN-accredited Maternity Nurse Programme and are building their hands-on newborn experience. They're at the start of their careers — bright, motivated and thoroughly prepared — and your placement is a meaningful part of how they get there.

Before any nurse comes to your home, we check every one of these ourselves:

  • Photo ID
  • A cleared DBS check
  • Valid insurance
  • Paediatric first aid (within the last three years)
  • Two references
  • Their maternity nurse certificate

Because they're building experience rather than working as established professionals, placements work a little differently from hiring privately — and cost a great deal less.

What they can support with

  • Bathing and changing newborns
  • Suggestions around breastfeeding and bottle-feeding
  • Helping baby settle, and supporting gentler patterns around sleep (if you'd like this)
  • Getting out and about with a newborn
  • Settling a new baby into family life — including supporting siblings through the change
  • Signposting local services such as Sure Start centres and family information services

A few things they don't do, for everyone's safety: they're never in sole charge of baby, and they don't give medication or any medical care.

How placements work

  • Baby's age: the scheme supports babies from birth to three months.
  • Length: each nurse stays with you for two to five days (or nights) — the days don't need to run consecutively.
  • More than one nurse: many families welcome two or three nurses across the placement window, staggered or back to back. Tell us what suits you and we'll plan around it.

What it costs

  • A one-off £15 admin fee to Babyem, payable after your call with us. This is what lets us get your advert out to our nurse network.
  • Daytime placements are unpaid. We ask that you cover your nurse's travel and meal expenses.
  • Overnight placements (for example 7pm–7am) are £35 per night, paid directly to your nurse, plus their travel. You'll agree the details together before they start.

There's nothing else — no ongoing fees, and no agency commission.

What we ask of you

Two things make this scheme work:

  • A short call with both parents before your nurse starts. This is a safeguarding step we take for every family, without exception.
  • A written reference at the end of the placement. This genuinely launches your nurse's career — it's the heart of the whole scheme, and families tell us it's a lovely thing to be part of.

What happens next

  1. Fill in the registration form below — it takes about five minutes.
  2. Book your call — you'll be taken straight to our calendar to choose a time that suits you.
  3. We talk it through together — a relaxed 15-minute video call about what you're looking for and how the scheme can help.
  4. Your advert goes out — once your £15 admin fee is through, we share your fully anonymised placement with our nurse network. Adverts go out on Fridays.
  5. You choose your nurse — we send you CVs as nurses apply, and you're in touch with one point of contact at Babyem throughout.
