Criminal record checks provide employers (and the agencies they use) with the peace of mind that their child is safe in your care.
These checks are a requirement by Ofsted for those nannies registering on the voluntary part of the childcare register.
Please note that nanny CRB checks are now known as DBS checks (Disclosure and Barring Service).
Babyem no longer completes individual DBS checks. If you need to complete your DBS check as part of your Ofsted package, or to join the Newborn Placement Scheme, we can guide you through the process to make it simple and easy for you to do.

Once this meeting has been completed, the DBS check will be processed and your employment background check will be underway. Babyem will contact you by email once the check has been completed. This process usually takes 4-6 weeks.
To comply with data protection, a copy of the disclosure will only be given to the individual who booked the DBS check, the certificate will be sent to you directly from the DBS by post. This process usually takes 2 weeks
You then MUST complete the update service within 30 days to validate the check. More information regarding this can be found in the Babyem hub. Watch the Babyem video on how to complete the DBS update service in your Babyem hub.
This short clip will show you how to locate and begin the Ofsted registration process as a Nanny.
DBS checks provide a full criminal record for an applicant. There are three levels of DBS checks – Standard, Enhanced and Enhanced with barred list checks.
Childcare professionals will be required to obtain an Enhanced DBS check which includes spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings plus any additional information held by local police that is reasonably considered relevant to the role in which the DBS is being used.
In 2013 an Update Service was introduced which allows DBS checks to be kept up to date and checked online without the need for a completely new check to be done.
The Update Service also allows employers to check a certificate online, with the childcarers consent.
Registration for the Update Service lasts for one year. The service costs £13 per year and starts from the date your DBS certificate was issued. This fee is not included in the cost of the Babyem DBS check service.
Members of the public cannot obtain a DBS Disclosure directly, they must go through an approved organisation such as Babyem to help.
An enhanced DBS may take up to 6 weeks to come through but timings are subject to whether the information provided is correct and what police departments are involved in the search. Babyem’s role is to check documents and verify the identity of the childcarer and then submit this to UCHECK who then verify the information and submit this to the DBS.
Babyem submit the DBS application once documents have been verified. Past this point, Babyem have no power over how long it will take for the DBS to be approved.
Once the DBS is complete, it will be sent to the applicant directly – not to Babyem. Babyem is not permitted, due to data protection regulations and privacy laws, to disclose a Nanny’s DBS to a potential employer nor to send a copy of the DBS. Should a potential employer wish to see a DBS they must ask you directly.

You can still apply for a DBS check, but you must identify on the application if your nationality has changed since birth (if you now have a passport for a different country to the one you were born in, for example). Please speak to the Babyem team on info@babyem.co.uk if you are unsure.
