Babyem regularly completes nanny DBS checks, so if you need to complete your DBS check, we can guide you through the process to make it simple and easy for you to do.
Criminal record checks provide employers (and the agencies they use) with the peace of mind that their child is safe in your care. These checks are also a requirement by Ofsted for those nannies registering on the voluntary part of the childcare register.
Please note that nanny CRB checks are now known as DBS checks (Disclosure and Barring Service).
SOCIAL DISTANCING: Please be aware that during this time of social distancing we will be completing video interviews as part of the DBS checking process.
Live in Nannies must inform us during the ID check if you are living and working at the same address.
Childminders must inform us during the ID check if you wish to do a home based check.
Appointments are available between 1pm – 2pm. You will require a good internet connection capable of completing a video call. Details will be provided during booking.
You will be provided with access to our DBS portal and required to register your details including your date of birth, addresses lived in over the last 5 years and any previous surnames.
If you are working as a live in nanny, or childminder you will be prompted to let us know your role when filling out the application form.
Babyem are currently unable to complete the identity check during the week at our office. Checks are primarily carried out via video call (see Step 1) Some people find it convenient to complete this on the same day as completing our Ofsted compliant Paediatric First Aid course. Please email email@example.com after you have paid in order to organise this with us. To complete the DBS check we will require you to bring an ORIGINAL:
Once this meeting has been completed, the DBS check will be processed and your employment background check will be underway. Babyem will contact you by email once the check has been completed. This process usually takes 4-6 weeks.
To comply with data protection, a copy of the disclosure will only be given to the individual who booked the DBS check, the certificate will be sent to you directly from the DBS by post. This process usually takes 2 weeks
You then MUST complete the update service within 30 days to validate the check. More information regarding this can be found in the Babyem hub. Watch the Babyem video on how to complete the DBS update service in your Babyem hub.
Babyem make registering with Ofsted as a nanny simple by providing guidance and support where required. We offer Ofsted compliant courses and are able to recommend agencies that provide Public Liability Insurance. We also provide step-by-step guidance on how to complete the CR1 Ofsted registration application form.
DBS checks provide a full criminal record for an applicant. There are three levels of DBS checks – Standard, Enhanced and Enhanced with barred list checks.
Childcare professionals will be required to obtain an Enhanced DBS check which includes spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings plus any additional information held by local police that is reasonably considered relevant to the role in which the DBS is being used.
In 2013 an Update Service was introduced which allows DBS checks to be kept up to date and checked online without the need for a completely new check to be done.
The Update Service also allows employers to check a certificate online, with the childcarers consent.
Registration for the Update Service lasts for one year. The service costs £13 per year and starts from the date your DBS certificate was issued. This fee is not included in the cost of the Babyem DBS check service.
Members of the public cannot obtain a DBS Disclosure directly, they must go through an approved organisation such as Babyem to help.
An enhanced DBS may take up to 6 weeks to come through but timings are subject to whether the information provided is correct and what police departments are involved in the search. Babyem’s role is to check documents and verify the identity of the childcarer and then submit this to UCHECK who then verify the information and submit this to the DBS.
Babyem submit the DBS application once documents have been verified. Past this point, Babyem have no power over how long it will take for the DBS to be approved.
Once the DBS is complete, it will be sent to the applicant directly – not to Babyem. Babyem is not permitted, due to data protection regulations and privacy laws, to disclose a Nanny’s DBS to a potential employer nor to send a copy of the DBS. Should a potential employer wish to see a DBS they must ask you directly.
You will need to complete a home-based check, to show that you both live and work at the same address. You will need to inform Babyem staff that you wish to apply as a Childminder to ensure your DBS check is processed accurately.

For Nanny’s that don’t live and work at the same address, you will not complete a home based check.
You can still apply for a DBS check, but you must identify on the application if your nationality has changed since birth (if you now have a passport for a different country to the one you were born in, for example). Please speak to the Babyem team on firstname.lastname@example.org if you are unsure.
